Retrocardiac mass: Echinococcus cyst

47 y. old filipino with known retrocardiac echinococcus cyst. Echocardiographic images courtesy of dr. Laura Salvini

Above: apical 4-chamber view with posterior tilt of transducer to show mass located posterior to AV junction, right atrium and ventricle. The mass is cyst-like with parenchimatous density and echo lucent center; no flow demonstrated inside the mass. There is impinging of the mass on the posterior right and left ventricular walls, but no obstruction to tricuspid valve flow is detected. Mass dimensions: longitudinal 6.8 cm, transverse 4.4 cm

Color Doppler, apical 4 chamber view, with progressive posterior tilt to show mass posterior to the right atrium. The mass displaces anteriorly the right atrium but does not obstruct significantly inferior vena cava flow.
